'Checking Out Of London' Review - Record Collector, April 2005

JOHN HACKETT
Checking Out Of London
(5/5) *
Hacktrax HTRX 002 (50:03)

Beautiful new album from Steve’s slightly lesser-known brother

Many people think John Hackett only accompanies his brother Steve on the latter’s solo albums. Well, John’s solo output is certainly limited (one album with Steve, one solo album), but now he delivers what has to be on every discerning listener’s Album of the Year list. Checking Out Of London is a collection of wonderful compositions, all of which have been written by the man himself (one song a collaboration musically), with lyrics provided by Nick Clabburn. John, who plays guitars, bass guitar, keyboards and sings is joined by brother Steve, Nick Magnus and Tony Patterson on a collection of songs which are mostly achingly emotional (especially on the heart-rending Winter) and moving. However, he also throws in some hard-rocking, rhythmic powerhouses, such as Ego & Id. The sound is slightly reminiscent of Steve Hackett’s 70s output, Camel’s late-70s album and Al Stewart. This is not to say, however, that John’s songs are derivative or lack personality. They certainly don’t, because the intricate arrangements and the supple and sometimes unexpected sounds make for enjoyable listening throughout.

An unexpected gem, this album is one you’ll go back to again… and again… and again.
